Zen Guerrilla

Zen Guerrilla were a rock band from San Francisco, California. Musically, the band evolved over their career. Their early sound was characterized by pyschedelic elements, such as delayed guitars and noise washes. Later, Zen Guerrilla fused blues, rock and gospel to create a sound which could be likened to bands such as the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

Zen Guerrilla formed in Newark, Delaware in the late 80s. Band members Andy Duvall (drums), Marcus Durant (vocals/harmonica), Carl Horne (bass), and Rich Millman (guitar) came together from local bands Marcus Hook, The Gollywogs, and Stone Groove.

The band released their self-titled CD on Philadelphia-based Compulsiv records in 1992. Soon after, Zen Guerrilla moved to Philadelphia and were regular performers around the city at clubs such as the Kyber Pass Pub. Around this time the band began a grueling touring schedule, which would have them cross the country multiple times through the end of the decade.

A fusion of blues, rock, and gospel, Zen Guerilla’s musical style comes as naturally to them as licking gravy. Their sound is as genuine and as pure as Al Green’s sweat. It screams, it moans, it shakes and it moves.

Zen Guerrilla relocated to San Francisco in 1994. Their constant touring increased their exposure, and, combined with their explosive live show, helped to release albums first with Alternative Tentacles and later Sub Pop.

The band dissolved sometime around 2003.

Batz Without Flesh was founded in 1986 by Claude S. Willey Jr. (vocals, synthesizer, guitar), John Dugan (vocals, horn, synthesizer) and John Knetz alias Sloth (guitar, effects and samplers) Batz Without Flesh themselves described their style as “Angry Hard Beat Electro-Punk.”
Electronic and industrial icons such as Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Clock DVA, The Human League and Portion Control served as models. After the debut EP Batz Without Flesh, released in 1987, John Dugan left the band. The 1989 album A Million Bricks was played by Claude Willey and John Knetz with the help of the guest musician Vinnie Spit alias SPIT (bass, drums).
A year later also, ‘Sloth’ left the project and devoted to the rock band Zen Guerrilla. The third publication No Memory was developed by Willey and SPIT. In 1992, this was the last album released. Claude S. Willey then founded the band Exterior Mirror and released Batz Without Flesh.
