Bottom Feeder

Bottom Feeder was me Rob Giglio (Mothra, Rockula, Stinkbomben, Beretta 76, now in Creem Circus) and Bill Jones (Rear Admiral).
We started around 89 or 90 right as grunge was heating up. I was studying Geology at Temple. I think Rob was in RTF at Temple still when we started. Bill worked as a grip on films and movies. Not sure if he had started that yet when we got together. We practiced at Bill’s place out near Manyunk on Henry Ave where he lived with Sharpie from Blue. They practiced there too. We played around town at the Khyber, 40th St Underground, The Barbary, Firenze, JC Dobbs (pretty sure we played there once). One of our last shows was at Silk City with the Dwarves. They were looking for somewhere to play and hopped on our bill. They went on first and dropped their drawers about a minute into the set. I think Number 2 Nippy played too. I think there was a house party or two (Stalag 13?). Some out of town shows. One in Jersey with The Conrads. One outside the city with some bar band called Hogans Heroes (not to be confused with the 80s hardcore band). I’m probably forgetting some. We played Rick D’s bachelor party at the Firenze and they brought in hookers off the street to dance in front of the stage. I think that was one of the nights I plugged my guitar in backwards and it sounded like shit. We played in WKDU once and somebody has video. I used to have a cassette of it. Maybe it’ll turn up. We eventually recorded at Modern Audio/Video where Rob worked. I remember Rob saying the engineer worked with Billy Joel so it came out super profesh sounding. We later recorded another demo with David Lowe from Blue in Bill’s basement. I always wish I was more prolific back then because I think we could have made a decent album. Some of the songs make me cringe in retrospect but Eyecatcher and Crawl are still cool. I was listening to a the first Union Carbide lp, Black Flag, all the stuff that was coming out of Sub Pop, all the other indie rock, Billy Childish, anything cool that I could snap up at the Record Exchange. I know Bill and Rob were the same way. We had a good little scene back then as you know.

Did the Fat Albert gang know that Mothra raided their closets? First, A Pixel Vision video of Mothra’s Part of A Note by Michael O’Reilly. Then a Mothra show at the Khyber. In the last two videos Mothra brought up some special guests – The late Wayne Hamilton (of Vibrolux, Rockula, Suffacox) and Mark Lux of at that time Temple of Bon Matin. – Thanks to Mark Lux for the tapes.

Mothra

Mothra easily had the best costumes and 7″ and cd packaging of any Philly bands. Often those kind of things have been used to make up for lets say a lack of talent. But not in the case of Mothra – they had the kitsch of Urge Overkill but musically with more of a 70’s hard rock thing rather than lounge sound. Starting as a three piece with Dan on guitar, Neil on bass & vocals and Rob (Beretta 76, Creem Circus, Blue Train, Rockula, Stinkbomben). Then later adding Chris Hunter (Red Paint People DTO) as a second guitarist.
