Formed in late 1985 by guitarist Rob Coye and bassist Roger Bodine (aka Food-Gas) in their hometown of Syracuse, NY, Grisly Fiction is a band that has weathered many changes and continues to progress. Originally using a drum machine and additional guitar by Jeremy Richards, the band played at clubs and parties in and around Syracuse. June 1986 saw the arrival of drummer Chuck Hanning, which pleased everyone who had seen Grisly Fiction’s shows and longed for · real drums to propel the Grisly attack. In July and August 1986,the band recorded their first demos at Grampa Studio in Brooklyn, NY. Jeremy Richards left the group to live in Boston at the end of Summer ’86. In October ’86 Grisly Fiction returned to Brooklyn to record as a three-piece. As a “Power-Noise Trio”, they developed a large and loyal following in Central NY, and were able to land opening gigs for some of the national touring acts that came through town, such as Sonic Youth and Henry Rollins. February 1987 saw the release of Laughing at the Ground, a cassette that illustrated the transitional point when Jeremy R. left for Boston, and Roger left the drum machine at home. During the next eighteen months, Grisly Fiction played many gigs in Central NY, and recorded many songs in Brooklyn, and at Penguin Studio in East Syracuse, NY. In February 1987, they released Live … Ayuh., a cassette recorded by the “post drum machine” Grisly Fiction.

In August 1988, armed with an album’s worth of recorded tunes, the band moved to Philadelphia, PA. In January 1989, they signed with NY City’s Community 3 label. In March 1989, Comm. 3 released their first record Scrape Face, followed by many promotional gigs throughout the northeast. In August 1989, Grisly Fiction travelled to the 24 track Flood Zone Studio in Richmond, VA, with Comm. 3 mogul Albert Garzon producing. In August and October 1989, the band did their first tours, which took in Bloomington, IN; Madison, WI; Lexington, KY; Iowa City, Rochester, Syracuse, and Boston. At the end of October 1989, drummer Chuck Hanning Left the .band. In February 1990, Jeremy Sustare (aka J-Boy) moved to Philly from Syracuse to take over drum duties. He played his first show with Grisly Fiction after only three weeks in the group. In March 1990, Comm. 3 released C’mon Bean Juice, their second LP. They also recorded a video for the song “Sculpt”, one of the first rock videos to use the state-of-the-art Sony High Definition video format. The next eight months were very busy for Grisly Fiction. While learning old and new material with the new lineup, they played 24 shows in Eastern and Midwest cities, such as Richmond,VA; Washington, DC; Baltimore, MD; Philly, Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, Madison, Fredonia , NY; Minneapolis, and Morgantown, W. VA. Grisly Fiction will be recording a single in December 1990, for February 1991 release. (Thanks for all the music, flyers, info Jeremy)

In 2010, on the occasion of a punk rock reunion show in Syracuse, N.Y. over Labor Day weekend, the band reconvened and prepared some new songs for the event. After a rousing return to performing live, additional shows were arranged and in August of 2011 the band recorded their latest CD “My Emotional Geometry Is Like Spider Webs“.

Grisly Fiction for this performance from Jackie’s show on WKDU was Rob Coye (Crankcase, Phantom Pilots) Gtr and Voc, Chuck Hanning (Crankcase) Drums and Voc and Roger Bodine (DTO, Underraga, Suktub, Heroics) on Bass and Voc.  (Sometime after this Jeremy took over for Chuck on drums.)
